Plezzel Lives in Geelong

Plezzel is a cloud-based advertising technology platform focused on real estate and based in Geelong. With the onset of COVID-19, many of us are finding ourselves working from home. We thought this would be a great opportunity to talk about where home is for us and what’s so great about our fast-growing regional city.

The Growth of Regional Cities

For decades, Australians from coastal and regional areas have fled their home towns for Melbourne. This is usually either because they want to study, work or be closer to a more diverse creative arts and restaurant scene. But that trend has slowed for a number of reasons.

In recent years, regional hubs like Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo have started reversing the flight to Melbourne. This has been achieved through local university campuses, improved public transports and new hospitals. The rise of the online marketplace also means it’s not as necessary as it was to move to capital cities to directly access large customer bases.

COVID-19 May Drive This Growth Further

Population growth is soaring in these regional cities. For example, Geelong added around 35,000 new residents in the five years to June 2019 for a total population of 260,000. Some experts believe this growth may be further fuelled by changing attitudes towards working at home in light of COVID-19.

The pandemic has prompted a shift in corporate culture so that more workers can do their jobs remotely and travel far less often into capital cities. You can choose to live somewhere you love without it impacting your career advancement.

Geelong Has the Best of Both Worlds

Geelong offers the opportunity for a great, balanced lifestyle that combines the best aspects of rural and city life. We have access to the coast and beautiful forests. Geelong already has a diverse restaurant scene with a variety of cuisines. While not quite up to Melbourne standards yet, Geelong also has a thriving creative arts scene which is only set to grow.

Geelong has a strong education sector, with a Deakin University campus sitting on the bay. There are also plenty of job opportunities in a range of industries including technology, health, education, automotive and construction. Only an hour long train ride away from Melbourne, you can also work in Victoria’s capital while living in Geelong.

Why Geelong is Great for the Team at Plezzel

It may come as a surprise to some but Geelong is a tech hub for real estate. There’s a very competitive market here with a spread of property management, residential sales, commercial sales and large land subdivision projects. We’re fortunate to have great customers in Geelong that allow us to trial and innovate new products prior to launching them nationally.

A great education sector in the local area is great for a tech company like Plezzel. Our team often talks at tech functions and provides the ability for internships and trainee programs within the company. These programs give us the opportunity to access and nurture young talent.

Our CEO Greg McCutcheon puts it best: “I would much rather that digital marketing and technology uni students have the opportunity to work in their chosen profession developing core skills rather than delivering pizza or cooking burgers”.
